As I mentioned in the introduction, buying the Motocompo happened completely by chance. I was browsing a Spanish buying and selling website in September 2014 when I found something that caught my attention…
The advert caught my attention. I did not know that Honda model, nor the anime/manga series mentioned in the advert. I started researching it and learning about its features, and I immediately knew I had to try to buy that rarity.
The first problem came when I contacted the seller and found out he lived in the Balearic Islands, specifically in Mallorca. That was already an issue because I am not keen on buying something so old and delicate without seeing it first.
The seller seemed trustworthy and kind. He explained the story he had with the bike and convinced me to buy it sight unseen.
The story is curious. The seller’s father had travelled to Japan for work in the 1980s. On one of the jobs carried out by the company, he was offered a Honda Motocompo as payment. He did not hesitate and thought of his son and the property they had in Mallorca. He packed it up and sent it home, where his son — the seller I contacted — used it for years to move around the property. You can see the blue paint, which was not original, and an ignition system using an electrical switch instead of the original key. That story captivated me for two reasons: the father-son connection, and the fact that I would be the second owner, which is very rare after 32 years.
Once the price for the Motocompo was agreed, I contacted a national transport company that had a route through Mallorca. I completed the paperwork and, within five days, they had it at the central warehouse. I quickly went to collect it with my Honda Logo!
